Assessment Workshop for Staff: Implementing authentic assessments to foster student engagement. Online
Colleagues are invited to this online workshop on Implementing Authentic Assessments to Foster Student Engagement.
"Authentic tasks replicate real-world challenges and standards of performance that experts or professionals typically face in the field." (Koh, 2017) Authentic Assessment centres assessment around use of the skills, knowledge and ability that students gain in their learning activities, and represents these in ways which are true to the purposes of their studies, where inauthentic assessments may be more of a test of a student's memory or ability to use additional tools within the hidden curriculum in order to complete tasks. We have heard from students at our assessment summit in October 2023 that exams can shift the student focus from learning to passing an exam.
As discussion of Generative AI in HE continues to grow, a recurring observation is that Authentic Assessment is vital to ensure that students are engaged in tasks which relate to their abilities within their subject area, not just their abilities to prompt ChatGPT without criticality of the output. When employed critically, by the assessor and the student, Generative AI can provide a valuable partner for exploring concepts, proof-reading and reducing the burden of lower-order tasks, allowing students to make higher-order decisions and considerations.
