Cyber Security Awareness Session Online
October is European Cyber Security Month – a 31-day awareness campaign that promotes cyber security for individuals and organisations, helping to raise awareness about the importance of information security and highlighting some simple steps that can be taken to protect data, whether personal, financial, or work-related.
Recent events show that the need for awareness-raising events like ECSM are greater than ever, with cyber attacks on Northumbria and Newcastle Universities, as well as a subsequent alert from the National Cyber Security Centre serving as urgent reminders that UK universities are being actively targeted by cyber criminals. Attacks are on the increase and the criminal groups responsible for them are exploiting weaknesses in hastily-deployed remote working technologies, as well as people’s desire for the latest information about COVID-19.
Together we must continue to do all we can to protect the University, its people and their data, as well as avoiding disruption to teaching and research – especially now that we are so dependent on remote learning.
During this online session the Information Security Team will explain why cyber crime is such a significant issue, offer advice on phishing, account compromise and passwords and tell you how to report cyber security concerns.
These sessions are open to both staff and students, with plenty of time for any cyber security questions at the end. The content will be the same at all three sessions, so you only need to attend once on the date that suits you best.
You don’t need to register for the sessions, just join using the Webex details below.
